Plane Pretend

Short Film — Spanish Subtitle Transcreation for Award-Winning Short Film

Project Type: Bilingual film transcreation (subtitles)
Director: Sharon Arteaga (NALIP’s “Latinx Directors to Know,” 2019)

Plane Pretend is a powerful short film about a family risking everything for a shot at a better life—told with raw emotion, beautiful visuals, and very few words. I was brought in to transcreate the second half of the film’s subtitles into Spanish, making sure the emotional weight and tone of each line carried over with cultural accuracy and heart.

I approached the work as a cultural adaptation rather than a direct translation. I adapted each line for regional nuance, pacing, and emotional clarity. This helped ensure that Spanish-speaking audiences experienced the same depth and impact as English-speaking viewers.

Outcome: A seamless bilingual experience that honored the filmmaker’s vision and helped the film connect deeply with Latinx audiences.
